Social Media is now a key role in any business and taken very seriously – you are the tone of voice for the brand and in one of the most public roles the company will have. These roles come with lots of responsibility and are now seen not only as a branding tool but driving key business commercials!
A good way to start your social media marketing career would be to intern within a digital marketing team to gain exposure to a head office environment and their channels of social media. Alternatively your first appointment could be as an Online Marketing Assistant with a view to specialising in social media.
Most social media roles will see you writing copy and editing so a background so strong written skills are key and this may form part of the interview process. To have the whole package you would ideally have a Marketing or PR degree or an industrial placement in a marketing division with perhaps internships in PR or Ecommerce. You may also have your own blog and be an accomplished user of social media sites.
To be successful you will you need to keep up to date with the latest ways to communicate to through online channels, be that Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or Pinterest and Instagram and know which channels are most appropriate – SnapChat has a specific demographic that won’t suit all! . You would need to demonstrate strong communication skills and be very commercial and creative with a good understanding of your target customer and their interests and social media usage.
A role in social media is very exciting and fast paced as technology to keep in contact with customers is continually developing and as you progress you would expect to take ownership of strategy for this area and manage an assistant. Increasingly you would have a good grasp of analytics and be able to identify high performance areas.
A career in Social Media is not for the fainthearted as it is a 24/7 outlet and the most successful live and breathe the space, don’t expect this to be 9-5! It can also be one of the most rewarding roles within marketing given its breadth across ecommerce, marketing and PR – both analytical and creative.
